History:
The community of Pacquet is believed to have been inhabited by the French at one time. The name Pacquet means "hideaway" in French, thus it is believed that the community may have been used as a hide-a-way at some time in history. An old cemetery is located in the community lending credence to the belief that the French did indeed live there at some time if not for the whole year. Various artifacts have been found in the area, several of which were corn cob pipes.
An old copper mine was once operated at Pacquet in the late 1850's and the remains can still be seen at the far end of the community today.
It is believed that fishing was the main reason for the settlement of Pacquet although residents have tried their hand at other jobs. In the early 1900's, fur merchants operated in the community, and in 1910 the sawmill was in operation which employed 3 men. From 1945 to 1960, a cannery was working which canned and sold seal, salmon, and rabbit throughout the province.
